HELP…….

Is your baby waking all of a sudden, seeking more connection, playing, or wanting to eat more during the night? Were they sleeping better a few days or weeks ago? Are you concerned about what is happening? You are not alone! This is called reverse cycling and has been described to me as if their little body clock was flipped.
According to Amy Bassett with Huckleberry, “Reverse cycling is when babies beyond the newborn period (usually 4 – 6 months old, but sometimes older babies, too) suddenly begin waking up hungry more frequently overnight. Babies stuck in a reverse cycling pattern typically eat less during the day. This results in a cycle of eating more at night to make up for the missed daytime feedings. The night wakings are usually unrelated to sleep associations and can occur in babies who used to sleep through the night.”
Reverse sleep cycling is exhausting for families and very common in babies and young children. Here are 5 possible reasons as to WHY this is happening:
Both can disrupt their circadian rhythm.
This confuses the brain about when it’s day vs night
This is developmental — not a problem yet.
How can parents help RESET this cycle:
Lastly, protect bedtime by remaining consistent and tank your baby/child up during the day. That may mean going into a different room when feeding to keep distractions to a minimum, turning off lights, and putting your phone away. Connect with your baby.
There is NO need to fix this in newborns under 8 weeks, reverse cycling is often normal and temporary. Feed on demand, every 2-4 hours and don’t force a schedule. Reverse sleep cycling isn’t your fault. It’s biology + habits and both can be gently shifted. It usually takes 1-2 weeks for rhythms to reset. Aim for gradual improvement, not instant change.
