Newborn Sleep or lack thereof…

Exhausted parent: Will I ever sleep again?

Sibling: Will my parents have energy to play with me again?

Family Pet: Why is this squeaky thing up ALL night?

Sleep deprivation isn’t just exhausting; it can be debilitating, as it can impact mood, healing, milk supply, bonding, relationships, older siblings, and everyone’s mental health.

In the first couple of days and weeks, one of the biggest challenges parents face is trying to keep their baby awake long enough to take a full feeding. Newborns are naturally very sleepy, and much of a parent’s energy goes into encouraging alertness so they can eat effectively.

Around weeks three to four, most babies begin to stay awake for longer periods. This shift can feel like a double-edged sword. On the positive side, babies are often more alert while feeding, which can make feedings smoother and more efficient.

At the same time, this increased wakefulness begins to show its downside, as now evenings and nights become harder. Many babies are still sleepy during the day but are more alert in the evening and overnight, which can feel frustrating and confusing for parents. It can be helpful to know what to expect from newborn sleep, so that parents can feel calmer and more confident in their responses. Colleen loves to help with newborn sleep shaping in the first 3 months.  Newborn sleep shaping is all about creating an environment and routine that supports your newborn’s natural rhythms; it is not rigid schedules and timed feedings.

Newborns spend much more time in active (light) sleep than in deep sleep. Their sleep cycles are short, often 30–50 minutes, which means they naturally wake more frequently. These brief wake-ups are not a sign of a problem or poor sleep habits; they are part of healthy brain development and survival.

It is common to see newborns stir, stretch or make little noises and grunts during sleep, wake up between their sleep cycles, and have a high need for support to fall back to sleep. This is not “bad sleep.” It’s normal newborn sleep.

The newborn stage brings both new challenges and new opportunities. As your newborn grows and spends more time awake, you can begin gently shaping daytime rhythms; supporting fuller feedings, interacting more during the day, and gradually helping their body learn the difference between day and night.

TIP: Expose your newborn to natural light in the early morning to help set their internal clocks for the day! Sunshine and light help them know it is time to be awake.

This is a normal and temporary phase of development, and with consistency, patience, and support, it becomes a foundation for healthier feeding, sleep, and connection moving forward.  Over time, this foundation supports longer stretches of sleep, emotional security, and a strong parent-child bond.

Sleep struggles affect more than nights…When sleep is off, everything feels harder,
mood, feedings, patience, relationships.

If sleep feels unsustainable right now, that’s not a failure; it’s a sign that support is needed.

You don’t have to wait until you’re at your breaking point to get help
