Babies, Teeth and the Dentist

When should you take your little one to see the dentist?

Baby-teeth-dentist
Baby’s first teeth

There is nothing cuter than a BIG CHEESY smile with a little tooth poking out of the gums. Little teeth are sharp and baby’s will love to chew on things even more than they did before. As with all things, baby’s can vary with teeth eruptions, but usually baby’s first teeth (bottom central incisors) will poke through between 3-6 months, followed by the top central incisors 6-9 months. Typically, by age 3, your child will have 20 pearly whites and a full smile.  [Read more…] about Babies, Teeth and the Dentist

Tips for dads:bonding with your newborn

Postpartum and Breastfeeding support-dad's and bonding
Bonding
Some new dad’s find it hard to bond completely with their little one especially if they are nursing.  Baby’s eat frequently and mom is the only one who can provide that nourishment in the beginning but soon, she can pump and share this responsibility with you.  There are many other ways for dad’s to connect with their little one’s right from the start. Dive right in and start connecting!
Studies show that “fathers who are at their baby’s birth, and hold their little one shortly afterwards, have very similar feelings of attachment to those experienced by mothers for the first few weeks” (Greenberg and Morris 1974; Peterson, Mehl and Liederman 1979; Parke and Sawin 1976).

Tis the season for colds and flu
Sickness stinks

Missed work, cancelled playgroups, school, practices and games missed and low attendance is happening everywhere. This season of sickness is particularly nasty, taking down entire families one person at a time. Did you know that you are contagious BEFORE you begin to show symptoms?

Your Child’s FIRST Test

Postpartum and Breastfeeding support
APGAR

In case your baby book has a spot for the APGAR numbers or someone asks what your baby’s APGAR score was, you can tell them.

Congratulations…your baby has been born and you are super excited to bond and learn all about them.  If your baby is doing well, this FIRST assessment is done quietly and quickly and most parents don’t even notice. It can be done by your doctor, midwife or nurse. This will be the first of many tests your child will be given and it happens at 1 minute and 5 minutes after delivery.  The 1 minute score is to see if there is an immediate need for further medical intervention while the 5 min score is to see how they are progressing to life outside the womb.
